For all of those who are adamant about prohibiting cell phone use while driving, you are about to have another battle on your hands. It appears we are greeting close to have internet and email access in our vehicles. And this includes having a router to control multiple devices from cell phones to laptops to video game systems.

But wait, it gets better. With the onset of IPv6 (see article), multiple items in your car could have their own IP address and broadcast data. According to the article,

“Because IPv6 allows for trillions of new IP addresses, your speedometer and windshield wipers could have their own addresses, enabling them to broadcast data to a server that aggregates the information and feeds back real-time weather and traffic reports”.

Now imagine a 16 year old trying to drive while his friends are in the back playing wireless video games, he is downloading MP3s on the in-dash computer, and his girlfriend in the passenger seat is downloading a movie on her laptop! There go isurance rates…
